About Therapy and My Approach
Our first few sessions will involve an evaluation of your needs and concerns. Sometimes more than one approach can be helpful in dealing with a certain situation. During the course of therapy, I am likely to draw on various therapeutic approaches according, in part, to the problem that is being treated and my assessment of what will best benefit you. My approach tends to be cognitive-behavioral (CBT) and family systems oriented. At times I may draw on narrative, solution focused and integrative approaches.
CBT is structured, goal-oriented, and focused on the present as opposed to the past. CBT utilizes between-session assignments to help the client apply new skills and techniques into daily life as well as to help augment the treatment.
Occasionally, after experiencing a traumatic event, people have difficulty processing the trauma memory and natural emotions that typically arise from the incident. This can promote various maladapted coping mechanisms, including avoidance, leading to faulty thought patterns causing serious disruptions in preexisting beliefs. I have received training in EMDR (bilateral stimulation) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT-C) an effective treatment model endorsed by the International Society of Traumatic Stress Studies and the U.S. Departments of Veteran Affairs and Defense. Additionally, I am a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP) through the International Association of Trauma Professionals.
